San Francisco, screens off

A lot of San Francisco spends the day in front of a screen, then gets home and opens another one to scroll through profiles. The city deserves better: taquerias in the Mission, old bars in North Beach, karaoke on Polk, a foggy walk between them in the jacket you were told to bring.

Karl the Fog keeps summer cool, and the warm nights tend to show up in September and October, when everyone suddenly wants to be outside. Microclimates mean the Mission can be mild while the Sunset is gray, so plans here work best close by.

YesTonite keeps it short on purpose. See who else is going out tonight, say hi once, agree on a spot, put the phone away.

Friday and Saturday are the main nights, with Thursday close behind. Evenings start early here, and California bars stop serving at 2 a.m.

Where SF goes out

  • The MissionValencia and 16th Street: murals, taquerias, cocktail bars and dives.
  • North BeachThe old Italian quarter, with historic bars and late-night slices.
  • The MarinaChestnut and Union Street, a young crowd and busy weekend bars.
  • The CastroThe city's iconic LGBTQ+ neighborhood, lively every weekend.
  • SoMaBig clubs and warehouse dance floors for staying out late.
  • Polk StreetA long strip of bars and karaoke between Nob Hill and Russian Hill.

How it works: three steps.

  1. Say you're out

Switch on "out tonight" and you get a green dot. It turns off by itself in the morning.

  2. Send one message

See a photo and an age, say something, and the chat opens for both of you. No matching first.

  3. Meet tonight

Pick a place, or join an event nearby. Same evening, not three weeks of small talk.

Events anyone can host

Anyone 18+ can host an event on YesTonite: a sunset picnic at Dolores Park, karaoke on Polk, a walk up Bernal Hill followed by drinks, a board game night in the Richmond. Join open events right away; for closed ones you request a spot, and the address stays private until you're in.

For local creators and venues

San Francisco creators, food and nightlife pages, bars, clubs and organizers: share your personal YesTonite link and earn a fixed amount for every new customer who joins through it, paid out monthly.
