More than banks and Bembel

By day Frankfurt is an office city, and in the evening the centre empties surprisingly fast: many people who work here are already on the train out to the Taunus or the Wetterau by six. Those who stay find the city is smaller and cosier than the skyline suggests.

In Sachsenhausen people drink apple wine from ribbed glasses and top up from the Bembel, a grey stoneware jug, often at long tables with strangers. Berger Straße is lined with pubs and wine bars, small bars open up in the Bahnhofsviertel, and in summer half of Frankfurt sits on the banks of the Main.
