Searches for speed dating keep rising, in big cities and smaller ones alike. That says something simple: people are tired of endless chatting and want to sit across from someone real. A few minutes, a few words, and you know whether you want to talk more.
This guide covers why speed dating is back, 20 speed dating questions that actually start conversations, how to find speed dating near you, and how to get the same flow every night with YesTonite, without the stopwatch. At the end you'll find city notes for New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich, with real places from our guides.
Why speed dating is back
Speed dating works because it skips the part most people find tiring. No profile to polish, no days of small talk before a first meeting. You show up, you talk, and within one evening you've met more people than in weeks of scrolling.
It also takes the pressure off. Everyone in the room is there for the same reason, so saying hello isn't awkward. If a conversation doesn't click, the bell rings and you move on. Nobody has to invent an excuse.
The 3-minute rule: what actually works
Most events give you a few minutes per person. That's enough to notice energy, humour and whether the conversation flows, but not enough for a life story. A few things help:
- Skip the job interview. "What do you do?" is fine, but it rarely leads anywhere fun. Ask about things people enjoy.
- Follow up once. One good follow-up question beats five new ones.
- Share, don't only ask. Answer your own question too, so it feels like a chat, not a survey.
- Keep notes short. A word or two after each round helps you remember who made you laugh.
20 speed dating questions that start real conversations
- What was the best part of your week so far?
- What would you do tonight if you had no plans at all?
- What's a place in this city you'd show a visitor first?
- What's something you got into recently?
- What's the best thing you've eaten this month?
- Are you more of a morning person or a late-night person?
- What's a small thing that always puts you in a good mood?
- Which trip are you still talking about?
- What's a skill you'd love to learn this year?
- What do friends usually ask you for help with?
- What song do you never skip?
- Coffee, a walk or a drink at a bar: what's your favourite first meeting?
- What's the most spontaneous thing you've done lately?
- What's a hobby you'd never admit to at work?
- Where in the city do you feel most at home?
- What's a film or series you'd happily watch again?
- What did you want to be when you were ten?
- What would your perfect Sunday look like?
- What's one thing on your list for this winter?
- If we met again next week, where should we go?
The last one is a gentle way to find out if the interest is mutual, without putting anyone on the spot.
How to find speed dating near you
Most cities have a few regular options:
- Event platforms. Search "speed dating" plus your city on ticketing and event sites. Look for a clear age range, a venue address and recent dates.
- Bars and venues. Some bars host singles nights or mixers. Ask the staff or check their event pages.
- Language exchanges and social clubs. Not speed dating by name, but the same idea: you move between tables and talk to strangers. Run clubs, dance socials and cooking classes work in a similar way.
Before you book, check how many people usually come and whether the event fits your age group. A smaller, well-run night is often better than a big one.
Speed dating vs. "a few messages, then meet"
Speed dating proves people want a few words and then a real meeting. The catch is the format: one fixed date, one room, a bell every few minutes. YesTonite takes the same idea and makes it work any night.
- No matching. You see a photo, an age and what someone is into tonight. Your first message opens the chat, with no waiting for a match.
- The green dot. Switch on "out tonight" and people nearby see that you're out too. It turns off by itself the next morning.
- Here now. At venues that take part, scan the QR code and see who in the room is open to meeting people. It's the speed dating room, minus the timer.
A few messages, then you meet. That's the whole flow.
Host your own mini speed-dating night
Any YesTonite member can host an event, so you can run your own speed-dating style evening at a bar you like. A few ideas that work:
- Pick a public, easy venue with a quiet corner and enough tables.
- Make it by request. Open events can be joined right away. For a speed-dating night, choose request to join, so you decide who gets a spot and keep the spots balanced for everyone.
- The address unlocks once someone is accepted. Only guests see where it is, which keeps the night calm and well organised.
- Bring the questions. Print the list above, or let everyone pick a number from 1 to 20.
City notes
New York. At The Uncommons, a board game café near Washington Square Park, asking the next table to join a game is normal. The free Tuesday language exchange run by The Language Collective moves you between tables, very close to a speed dating format. More in our New York meet people guide and on the New York page.
Chicago. INT'L CAFE Chicago runs language exchanges with a table for each language. At Guthrie's Tavern in Lakeview you borrow a board game and invite the next table to play. See the Chicago meet people guide and the Chicago page.
Los Angeles. Social Lingo LA hands out name tags for the languages you speak and want to practise, then everyone mingles. At EightyTwo, an arcade bar in the Arts District, challenging someone to a game is a natural opener. More in the Los Angeles meet people guide and on the Los Angeles page.
Cologne. At Brauhaus Päffgen, sharing a long wooden table with locals is the normal way to meet people. Bingo Club, a board game café opposite Köln Süd station, gives a group of new people something to do together straight away. See the Cologne meet people guide and the Cologne page.
Hamburg. The monthly Salsa Night at Zinnschmelze starts with a crash course, and rotating partners means you meet lots of people. At Ratsherrn Braugasthaus Altes Mädchen in the Schanze, comparing beers at a shared table gets people talking. More in the Hamburg meet people guide and on the Hamburg page.
Munich. The weekly Salsa Beats Social at Siempre Salsa e.V. rotates partners all evening, a lot like speed dating with music. At Hofbräuhaus München you simply sit down with whoever is already at the table. See the Munich meet people guide and the Munich page.
Safety
- Meet in a public place for a first meeting, and get there on your own.
- Tell a friend where you're going and who you're meeting.
- Keep your drink with you and pace yourself.
- Take your time with personal details like your address or workplace.
- Trust your gut. You can leave any conversation or event at any point, no explanation needed.
