Halloween cover: meet someone this Halloween

Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, 31 October. That makes it one of the best nights of the year to go out, and one of the easiest to meet someone new. Half the room is in costume, nobody takes themselves too seriously, and "so what are you supposed to be?" is a perfectly normal first line. Here is how to make the most of it, with real places from our city guides in eight cities.

Prefer to watch? Our 7-minute episode covers costumes that start conversations, four lines that work and one real place in 8 cities: watch Out Tonight Ep 1 on YouTube.

Why Halloween is the easiest night to meet people

On a normal Saturday, talking to a stranger needs a reason. On Halloween, everyone is wearing one. A costume is a built-in question: people want you to guess who they are, notice the detail, ask where they found that hat. And playing a character for one night makes it easier to leave a little shyness at home.

Bars are fuller than usual, groups mix and people move between parties. On a Saturday the night runs late, so there is time to change plans if the first place is not right.

Costume ideas that start conversations

  • Something people can guess. A character from a film or series everyone has seen gets you more conversations than a clever reference only you understand.
  • Half of a pair, on purpose. Go as ketchup without the mustard, or as a lock with a small sign that says "key wanted". It is a joke that invites people to play along.
  • Costumes for two. Going with a date? Try salt and pepper, a painter and their painting, a ghost and a ghost hunter, or two famous detectives. Matching without being identical gets the most comments.
  • Something comfortable. You will stand, dance and probably walk between bars. A mask you can take off and shoes you can walk in matter more than a perfect outfit.
  • The low-effort option. Cat ears, a cape or a bit of face paint all count.

Conversation starters for tonight

  • "Okay, I have to ask: who are you?"
  • "Did you make that yourself?"
  • "Best costume you have seen tonight, apart from yours?"
  • "Where is everyone heading after this?"

The last one matters. On Halloween people tend to move on, and "want to come along?" is a natural invitation rather than a big move.

Going out solo on Halloween

On Halloween, going out alone is easier than on almost any other night. Pick a place with something to do: a dance night that starts with a class, a bar with games, a beer hall with long shared tables. Arrive a little early, while it is calmer and people are still looking for company. Say hi to the bartender, compliment one costume, join a game or a queue. If the place feels flat after an hour, move on. Everyone else is doing the same.

Stay safe and enjoy it

  • Meet new people in busy, public places, and keep a first meeting there.
  • Tell a friend where you are going and who you are meeting, or share your location.
  • Watch your drink. Masks also make people harder to recognise later, so swap names and see each other's real face before you move on to the next place.
  • Plan your ride home before you go out. Halloween nights are busy, and taxis take longer.
  • No means no, costume or not.

Where to go in eight cities

All places come from our city guides. Hours change and Halloween nights can be special, so check before you go.

New York

Union Pool in Williamsburg has a reputation as one of Brooklyn's easiest bars for striking up a conversation, especially at weekends, and Brooklyn Bowl puts bowling lanes, a big bar and a live stage under one roof. For a late date, Smalls Jazz Club in the West Village has jam sessions until 4am. More in the New York meet people guide.

Los Angeles

Pick one part of town for the evening, because traffic can turn a short hop into an hour. EightyTwo in the Arts District is a vintage arcade bar, strictly 21+. El Floridita in Hollywood has live salsa bands on Friday and Saturday nights, with a dance lesson at 8:30pm. For a date, Griffith Observatory has free entry and the whole city lit up below. See the Los Angeles date spots guide.

Chicago

Guthrie's Tavern in Lakeview keeps a huge stash of board games behind the bar, and inviting the next table to join is normal. Kingston Mines in Lincoln Park plays live blues on two stages and stays open until 4am on Saturdays. For a date, the Green Mill in Uptown is a legendary jazz lounge; arrive early at weekends. More in the Chicago meet people guide.

Houston

Axelrad Beer Garden in Midtown has hammocks, food trucks and shared picnic tables, and Moon Tower Inn in the East End is casual enough that chatting with the next group comes naturally. The most fitting Halloween date of all: at sunset, more than 300,000 bats stream out from under the Waugh Drive Bridge in Buffalo Bayou Park, free to watch from the viewing platform. See the Houston date spots guide.

Cologne

Cologne knows costumes better than most cities, with the carnival season starting on 11 November. In a brauhaus like Brauhaus Päffgen or FRÜH am Dom you share long tables, and the waiters keep bringing small glasses of Kölsch until you put your beer mat on top. Later, head to Ehrenfeld and Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld. For a date, sit on the Rheinboulevard steps in Deutz, facing the cathedral. More in the Cologne meet people guide.

Frankfurt

Our guide lists Conexión Grand Party, a big salsa, bachata and kizomba night held every Saturday at a dance school in Hausen, where partners change all evening. For something calmer, Apfelwein Wagner in Sachsenhausen seats you at long wooden tables with strangers, which is part of the custom. For a date, walk across the Eiserner Steg footbridge and look back at the skyline. More in the Frankfurt meet people guide.

Oslo

Halloween has become more popular in Norway over the years, and costume parties are a fun reason to go out in the dark season. Kulturhuset i Oslo at Youngstorget has a bar on each of its three floors, a games room and DJs at weekends, open until 03:00 on Saturdays. The age limit is 20, so bring ID. For a date, Ekebergparken is a free sculpture park in the forest, open around the clock. More in the Oslo meet people guide.

Athens

Halloween is smaller in Greece, but costume and theme nights are a good excuse to go out; Athens bars fill up after 23:00 anyway. On Saturdays, the Felices Salsa Bachata Party at Tropicana Alsos Latin Bar opens with a bachata class at 23:00, and Baba Au Rum in the historic centre is often so busy that people spill out onto the street. For a date the evening before, the Acropolis Museum stays open until 22:00 every Friday. More in the Athens meet people guide.
