Halloween extra hour: date ideas for a night one hour longer
Daylight saving time ends on Halloween night in the US, so Saturday gets one extra hour. A horror movie date, a late walk, a costume crawl and late food in six US cities.

This year Halloween gets a bonus. In the United States, daylight saving time ends at 2am on Sunday, 1 November 2026, when the clocks go back to 1am. That happens in the middle of Halloween night, Saturday 31 October. So the night is one hour longer than usual: a bar that closes at 2am closes at 2am on the new clock, and you get an hour you didn't have the night before.
Prefer to watch? The extra hour has its own chapter in our 7-minute episode: watch Out Tonight Ep 1 on YouTube.
Europe already changed its clocks on 25 October, so this one is for the US.
Here are a few ways to use it, with real places from our city guides in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Miami. For costume ideas and conversation starters, see our Halloween 2026 guide to meeting people.
Idea 1: a horror movie date
A scary film is one of the oldest date ideas for a reason. You share the jumps, you laugh at yourselves for jumping, and when the lights come up you already have something to talk about. That's the part people forget: the movie is only the first half. Plan the second half before you go.
- Film first, talk after. Pick an early showing, then walk to a bar or a late kitchen nearby.
- Scary films are a great icebreaker. Who saw the twist coming, who looked away, which scene was the scariest.
- Know your date's limit. Ask what they can watch before you buy tickets.
- Save one for later. If the first date goes well, a horror night at home or a second film is an easy, natural second date.
Horror films that work on a date
Well-known titles, from classic to recent, that are scary but still leave you in the mood to talk:
- Halloween (1978): the obvious choice for the night, and still tense.
- The Shining (1980): slow, strange and full of scenes you'll want to discuss.
- Scream (1996): scary and funny, with characters who know all the horror rules.
- The Others (2001): an old house, a lot of fog and a great ending.
- Shaun of the Dead (2004): the best pick if one of you is not a horror fan.
- The Conjuring (2013): a classic haunted house story, made for jumping together.
- Get Out (2017): sharp, clever and perfect for a long talk afterwards.
- A Quiet Place (2018): you'll both hold your breath. Skip the crunchy snacks.
- Ready or Not (2019): a wedding night turns into a deadly game of hide and seek, scary and very funny.
Idea 2: a late walk
An extra hour is the perfect excuse for a walk you'd normally skip because it's too late. Walking side by side is easier than sitting face to face, and the streets on Halloween are a show of their own.
Idea 3: a costume bar crawl
Three bars, one costume, and a rule: at each stop you ask one stranger what they're dressed as. Keep the bars close together and agree on a meeting point in case the group splits.
Idea 4: a late-night food spot
Every good Halloween ends with food, and tonight that last stop can be an hour later than usual.
Where to go in six US cities
New York
For the movie date, Nitehawk Cinema Williamsburg serves food and drinks at your seat, with bars all around for the talk afterwards. For a costume crawl, Union Pool and Brooklyn Bowl are both in Williamsburg and both easy places to start a conversation. For the late walk, Brooklyn Bridge Park is open until 1am with the Manhattan skyline in front of you, and the free Staten Island Ferry runs 24 hours a day. Night owls can end at Smalls Jazz Club, with jam sessions until 4am. More in the New York date spots guide and on our New York page.
Los Angeles
Vidiots in Eagle Rock is a non-profit cinema and video store with themed nights. Griffith Observatory is open until 10pm from Tuesday to Sunday with free entry, a great start to a late walk. For a costume crowd, EightyTwo in the Arts District has vintage arcade machines and a big patio, and Highland Park Bowl is a restored vintage bowling alley with bars. See the Los Angeles date spots guide.
Chicago
Kingston Mines has live blues on two stages and stays open until 4am on Saturdays, so the extra hour comes with a soundtrack. Green Mill Cocktail Lounge in Uptown is dark, legendary and atmospheric, just right for a Halloween drink. For late food, Pequod's Pizza is open late every night, and Big Star in Wicker Park is a busy taco bar where it's easy to fall into conversation. More in the Chicago meet people guide.
Houston
Start at sunset at Buffalo Bayou Park, where more than 300,000 bats stream out from under the Waugh Drive Bridge, the most Halloween thing you can do for free. Then move on to Axelrad Beer Garden in Midtown, or Moon Tower Inn in the East End, open until midnight or later. See the Houston date spots guide.
Dallas
The historic Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff shows repertory films and special events, and a cult classic in an old movie palace is hard to beat on Halloween. For a darker drink, Midnight Rambler is an underground cocktail lounge open from Tuesday to Saturday evenings; book ahead. Deep Ellum, home of Pecan Lodge, is full of bars and music venues for a crawl. More in the Dallas date spots guide.
Miami
Ball & Chain on Calle Ocho has live Latin music and free salsa lessons. In Wynwood, 1-800-Lucky has food stalls, a bar and karaoke. For the late bite, Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana is open from morning until late, with Cuban coffee and pastries at the walk-up window. See the Miami date spots guide.
A few rules for the long night
Plan the way home before you go out. One more hour of night is not one more hour of drinks. On a first date, stay in busy places and tell a friend where you are. And check opening times, because venues often change their hours for Halloween.
How YesTonite fits into the extra hour
An unexpected hour is best used on the spot. That's what YesTonite is built for.
- Out tonight. Switch on the green dot and people nearby can see you're out too. It turns off by itself the next morning.
- One message. No matching, no waiting. You see a photo, an age and what someone is into tonight, and your first message opens the chat. Say which film you have in mind.
- Meet within the hour. If you both like the plan, meet at a busy place nearby. Tonight the clock is literally on your side.
- Events and Here now. Any member can host an event at a real venue, like a horror movie night. In bars that take part, scan the Here now QR code to see who is open to meeting people.
YesTonite is free, for people 18 and over, and available in 44 languages. On Saturday night, switch on your green dot and see who else wants to spend the extra hour well.
