Meet someone tonight with no preparation: pick a place where talking is normal, go alone and start with one person. Real places in Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich.

To meet someone tonight you need no preparation, just the right place: go where people sit at long tables or do something together, stay at least an hour and talk to one person with a simple line. It works best in brewery pubs, at dance nights, over board games and after a comedy show. Below are real places in five German cities, checked in October 2026.
How do you meet someone tonight, on short notice?
The most common mistake is a packed bar where everyone stands in their own group. You first have to break into a group there, and that is hard for almost everyone. Pick a place where contact is built in instead:
- Choose one place by 18:00. One plan beats three maybes. Check tonight's programme, because some things only run on certain days.
- Going alone is fine. You look more approachable than a group, and you leave when you want.
- Sit at the bar or a long table. A seat next to other people makes the first word much easier than a table of your own.
- Stay at least an hour. The first twenty minutes often feel odd. That passes.
- Talk to one person, not everyone. One good conversation is enough for a good night.
What do I say first?
The best first line is about what is happening around you. It does not sound like a line, and nobody has to invent anything:
- "Is this seat free?" Completely normal at a long table.
- "What are you drinking? I don't know this place."
- "Have you been here before, or is it your first time too?"
- "Which part of the show did you like best?"
If someone answers briefly and looks away, leave it there. It is no drama: say thanks and turn back. A no is a no, without discussion.
Where can you do this tonight? Five cities
All places come from our city guides. Programmes change with the season, so check first.
Berlin
Clärchens Ballhaus in Mitte, a historic ballroom from 1913, runs standard and Latin nights with a short lesson first, so beginners can join. On Tuesdays from 18:00 there is an open game night at Boardroom in Schöneberg, where you simply join a table of strangers. More in the Berlin guide to meeting people.
Cologne
At FRÜH am Dom the waiters keep bringing Kölsch until you put your beer mat on the glass, and the shared tables make it easy to talk to your neighbours. On Fridays and Saturdays die wohngemeinschaft in the Belgian Quarter has DJs, and a round of table tennis breaks the ice. More in the Cologne guide.
Frankfurt
Apfelwein Wagner in Sachsenhausen is open daily until midnight. Sharing a long wooden table with strangers is part of the custom, which is the whole point. On several dates a month Comedy Kitchen near the Alte Oper runs English-language stand-up, with an international crowd and an easy opener at the bar. More in the Frankfurt guide.
Hamburg
Ratsherrn Braugasthaus Altes Mädchen in Sternschanze has 30 craft beers on tap and long tables, and comparing beers is a comfortable way to start talking. Most weeks the English-language Burning Mic Comedy Show runs at the Indra on the Große Freiheit. More in the Hamburg guide.
Munich
At Augustiner-Keller in Maxvorstadt sharing a long table is completely normal. The garden is seasonal, the restaurant stays open, and from November to February there are ice stock lanes. Bahnwärter Thiel on the old slaughterhouse grounds has club nights, concerts, poetry slams and PowerPoint karaoke, with an open crowd. More in the Munich guide.
What if nothing happens?
That is part of it. You went out, exchanged a few words and now know a new place. Go back next week: the second time, people often recognise you, and a familiar face turns into a conversation faster. It is the most reliable method there is, even if it is a little less spontaneous.
Keeping the night safe
Meet new people in public places, tell a friend where you are and plan your own way home. You can leave any time without explaining.
FAQ
Is it strange to go out alone in the evening?
No. At bars, comedy shows and game nights many people are on their own, and nobody pays attention. With a fixed plan it feels normal within a few minutes.
Where is the fastest place to meet someone?
Wherever you share a table or do something together: a brewery pub, an apple wine tavern, a game night or a dance night with rotating partners. A packed bar usually takes longer.
Which day of the week works best?
It depends on the place. Brewery pubs and apple wine taverns work any evening, dance and game nights only on set days. Weeknights are quieter, which often makes talking easier.
How do I ask for their contact without it being awkward?
Just say it: "I enjoyed talking to you, shall we meet again?" It is clear and friendly, and the other person can answer just as clearly.
