Europe's capitals are full of good places for a date, but the famous ones aren't always the best ones. Our international dating guide lists real date spots for each city, from cheap and casual to special occasion. Here are one or two favourites from ten capitals, all taken from the city guides.
For each city we also add what a simple first date costs: 2 beers and 2 cappuccinos, our own estimate in euros from Numbeo data.
Paris
For a classic, low-pressure first date, take a coffee or a glass of wine on the terrace of Café de Flore in Saint-Germain-des-Prés and watch the street go by. If it's Thursday, the Musée d'Orsay stays open until 21:45, with a cheaper evening ticket after 18:00, and the riverside walk afterwards is lovely. A simple date in Paris costs about 22.80 EUR. Berlin
Café am Neuen See is a lakeside café and beer garden hidden in the Tiergarten, great for a relaxed daytime first date followed by a walk through the park. For something free and very Berlin, walk the old runways of Tempelhofer Feld and watch the sunset; the gates close at dusk. Budget: about 17.40 EUR. See the Berlin date spots guide.
Madrid
The Templo de Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple in a hilltop park, is the city's classic sunset spot. Madrid runs late, so finish the night like locals do at Chocolatería San Ginés near Sol, which stays open around the clock from Thursday to Sunday for chocolate con churros. Budget: about 12.50 EUR. More in the Madrid date spots guide.
Rome
Go to the Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventine hill at sunset: a free garden of orange trees with a terrace over the rooftops and domes. A few minutes away, look through the famous keyhole of the Knights of Malta gate. For a cheap and tasty date, try Trapizzino Testaccio, the original home of the stuffed pizza-bread triangle. Budget: about 13.70 EUR. See the Rome date spots guide.
Amsterdam
Café 't Smalle in the Jordaan is a classic brown café with a small terrace right by the canal, the kind of cosy place where many Dutch first dates happen. Or take the free ferry behind Centraal Station to the Eye Filmmuseum, catch a film and have a drink with a view of the IJ. Budget: about 21.20 EUR. More in the Amsterdam date spots guide.
Lisbon
A coffee and a pastel de nata at A Brasileira in Chiado is the easy Lisbon first date. For a second date, Foxtrot in Príncipe Real is a dim, old-fashioned cocktail bar with Art Nouveau decor and quiet corners. Budget: about 11.40 EUR, the cheapest of these ten capitals. See the Lisbon date spots guide.
Warsaw
Łazienki Królewskie, the royal park with the Palace on the Isle, ponds and peacocks, is free and open daily from 6:00 to 21:00, perfect for a walking date. Then move on to Kieliszki na Próżnej, a popular wine bar with a long list of wines by the glass; book from Thursday to Saturday. Budget: about 15.90 EUR. More in the Warsaw date spots guide.
Prague
Walk the walls of Vyšehrad, a free hilltop fortress above the river, at sunset. It's much calmer than the Castle. Afterwards, Lokál Dlouhááá is a lively beer hall with tank Pilsner and honest Czech food at fair prices, a great way to show a newcomer how Prague eats and drinks. Budget: about 12.20 EUR. See the Prague date spots guide.
Vienna
Café Sperl, a coffee house from 1880 with marble tables and billiards, is the perfect low-pressure first date. On Thursdays the Kunsthistorisches Museum stays open until 21:00, and art followed by cake under its dome makes a memorable evening; book a time slot online. Budget: about 20.30 EUR. More in the Vienna date spots guide.
Budapest
In the evening, the terraces of Fisherman's Bastion are free and much calmer than by day, with a postcard view of Parliament. For a date you'll both remember, soak in the steaming outdoor pools of Széchenyi Thermal Bath, open for bathing until 22:00, even in winter. Budget: about 12.50 EUR. See the Budapest date spots guide.
A few tips that work in every capital
- Use the late museum nights. Paris, Vienna and many others have one or two evenings a week when museums stay open late. Art gives you endless things to talk about.
- Plan around sunset. Debod in Madrid, the Aventine in Rome, Vyšehrad in Prague: a free viewpoint at golden hour beats an expensive table.
- Book the small places. Rooftops, wine bars and special-occasion restaurants fill up at weekends. Cafés, parks and markets are walk-in.
- Know the local habits. Punctuality counts in Berlin and Vienna, dinner starts late in Madrid and Lisbon, and in Warsaw flowers come in odd numbers. Each country has a dating culture page in the guide.
