YesTonite cover: Is Austin good for dating? Joint 8th of 20 US cities overall in the 2026 City Index

Yes, Austin is a good city for dating if you like outdoor plans, live music and dancing, though it is mid-table rather than the best in the US. In our 2026 City Index it scores 5.3 out of 10 overall, joint 8th of the 20 US cities we track. It does well on outdoor weather and on safety compared with other US cities, and its weak spot is the cost of a date.

Updated November 2026. Numbers come from the YesTonite City Index, which covers 157 cities.

You may have seen older lists that call Austin the number one city for dating. Our index is cooler on it, mainly because it also weighs prices, closing times and safety, and it compares Austin with cities around the world.

Austin's dating scores at a glance

Scores run from 1 to 10, and tied cities share a rank.

  • Overall: 5.3, joint 8th of 20 US cities and joint 90th of the 140 cities with an overall score.
  • Outdoor season: 7.8, joint 3rd in the US, with about nine warm months a year.
  • Safe at night: 4.7, 3rd in the US but joint 85th worldwide.
  • Meeting in real life: 6.8, joint 8th in the US.
  • Late nights: 5.0, joint 8th in the US. Bars close at 2am.
  • Open to dating: 6.8. This score rests on national survey data, so all 20 US cities share it. It says little about Austin itself.
  • Date budget: 3.4, joint 10th in the US and joint 132nd worldwide.

What Austin's dating scene does well

Austin gives you an easy reason to talk to people. Dance lessons are the best icebreaker in town: Broken Spoke is a classic honky-tonk with two-step and swing lessons from Wednesday to Saturday at 8pm, and after the lesson everyone dances with everyone. Plenty of residents are newcomers too, so people are used to talking to strangers and making plans fast.

The crowd is also fairly young. Austin has a median age of 34.8, and 44.5% of people counted as single in the local statistics (definitions vary between cities). One thing to know: there are about 94 women per 100 men, so the balance is a little uneven if you are a man dating women.

Where Austin falls short

  • Cost: two beers and two cappuccinos come to about €24, and dinner for two to about €76. Tip around 20 percent on top.
  • Distance: the city is spread out and public transport thins out late. Stay in one area, such as Rainey Street, East Sixth or South Congress, or plan a rideshare home.
  • Summer heat: summers are very hot, so people go out in the evening and early morning. Right now, in autumn, the patios are at their best.
  • Safety at night: the score is good for the US and only middling worldwide. Meet somewhere public, tell a friend where you are, and get home your own way.

In spring, add the famous Congress Avenue Bridge bats to your list. They fly out around sunset from late March to around October, so their season is over for this year.
