Evenings by the Ljubljanica

In Ljubljana the evening often starts by the Ljubljanica river: the terraces along the embankments are full from early evening, all the way from the Triple Bridge to Trnovo. Because lots of students go home on Fridays, Thursday is a big night here, and at weekends the city belongs to those who stayed.

Anyone after something more alternative heads to Metelkova, a former army barracks where the party starts after midnight. On Fridays from spring to autumn, Odprta kuhna, the open-air food market, fills Pogačarjev trg, and in summer some evenings move to the coast, to Piran and Portorož, or to Lent in Maribor. And yes, plenty of people head for the mountains on Saturday morning, so Friday nights sometimes end earlier than you'd expect.
