Auckland, keen as

Aucklanders are great at making plans and less great at keeping them. "Keen for a drink this week?" turns into "yeah nah, flat out at work", and by then it's the weekend and everyone's driving somewhere else. The motorway doesn't help: half the city thinks the other half is too far away.

Which is a pity, because Auckland nights are easy once you're out. Long summer evenings pull everyone down to the water at Wynyard Quarter and Britomart, Ponsonby Road is busy from early, and K Road keeps going late with live music and a properly mixed crowd. Over the bridge, Takapuna has its own beachside scene.

YesTonite turns "sometime" into tonight: see who's out near you, say kia ora once and sort out where to meet. Sweet as.

Friday and Saturday are the busiest, and summer from December to February brings the longest evenings. Plenty of nights start with an early drink by the water.

Where Auckland goes out

  • Ponsonby RoadA long strip of bars and restaurants, busy from early evening.
  • Karangahape RoadK Road: late bars, live music and an arty, mixed crowd.
  • BritomartRestored downtown streets with bars and restaurants near the ferries.
  • Wynyard QuarterRelaxed harbourside spots for a sunset drink.
  • KingslandA small, friendly cluster of bars along New North Road.
  • TakapunaThe North Shore's beachside strip of bars and restaurants.

How it works: three steps.

  1. Say you're out

Switch on "out tonight" and you get a green dot. It turns off by itself in the morning.

  2. Send one message

See a photo and an age, say something, and the chat opens for both of you. No matching first.

  3. Meet tonight

Pick a place, or join an event nearby. Same evening, not three weeks of small talk.

Events anyone can host

Know a deck with a sunset view, a quiz night worth the drive or a good walk up Maungawhau? Anyone 18+ can host an event on YesTonite: drinks on the waterfront, a gig on K Road, a Saturday morning swim at Takapuna. Open ones people join right away; for closed ones guests request a spot and the address stays private.

For local creators and venues
