Casual dating safety: simple habits for meeting someone new
A few easy habits make meeting new people safer and more relaxed: chat first, meet in public, share your plans, and use block and report.
Minn The YesTonite team · · 4 min qari
Meeting someone new should feel exciting, not stressful. A few simple habits make a big difference: they help you relax, enjoy the evening and leave whenever you want. None of them are complicated, and they work whether it's your first date or your fiftieth.
This guide covers what to do before, during and after meeting someone, how consent and respect fit in, and the tools YesTonite gives you to block, report and keep your details private.
Before you meet
Chat a little first
A few messages help you get a feel for someone. You don't need a long conversation, but it's worth checking that you're on the same page about what kind of evening you're both after. Our guide to what casual dating is has tips on setting expectations early.
Keep personal details private
Your address, workplace, surname and social media accounts can all wait. On YesTonite, your first name isn't on your profile: it's shared inside a chat only when you tap "Share your name". Take your time.
Choose a public place
Pick somewhere you know: a busy bar, a café, a restaurant or an event. Familiar places are easier to relax in, and you'll know how to get home. Avoid meeting at someone's home, or inviting them to yours, for a first date.
Tell a friend
Let a friend know where you're going, who you're meeting and when you plan to be back. A quick message when you arrive and when you leave is a simple, reassuring routine.
- Where: the name of the place.
- When: the time you're meeting and roughly when you'll be home.
- Who: a screenshot of the profile is enough.
During the date
- Arrange your own way there and back. That way, leaving is always easy.
- Keep an eye on your drink and your belongings. Order your own drinks and don't leave them unattended.
- Keep your phone charged. It's your way to check in, call a ride or get help.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, it's fine to leave early. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
Leaving early is always allowed. A polite "I'm going to head off" is all you need.
Respect goes both ways
Consent is at the heart of casual dating. It can change at any moment, before a date, during it or after it. A yes to a drink is a yes to a drink. Ask, listen and accept "no" or "not tonight" without discussion, persuasion or sulking.
Respect also means not pushing for personal details, not sharing someone's photos or messages, and not turning up somewhere uninvited. If you'd like to see someone again, say so; if they don't, thank them and move on.
Signs to slow down
- Pressure to move the meeting somewhere private.
- Repeated questions about your address or where you work.
- Ignoring a "no" or trying to talk you out of it.
- A story that keeps changing, or photos that don't seem to match.
Any one of these is a good reason to end the conversation. You don't need to give a reason.
After the date
Check in with your friend when you're home. If you'd like to meet again, say so. If not, a short, kind message is good manners when you've already met. And if anything about the evening made you uncomfortable, use the tools below.
Safety tools on YesTonite
Block
Blocking someone hides you from each other everywhere: the feed, profiles, chats and events. It takes a couple of taps. Use it whenever you want someone out of your space, no matter how small the reason.
Report
Reporting sends the profile or conversation to our team. By default, it also blocks the person, so you don't have to do both. Serious reports are reviewed with priority. If someone threatens you or behaves dangerously, report them and contact local emergency services.
Privacy by design
- No exact location. Others only ever see an approximate distance.
- No exact activity times. Just a pink dot for recent activity, or a rough hint like "Active today".
- Names when you choose. First names are shared only when each person taps "Share your name".
- Private event addresses. The exact address and how to get in go to confirmed guests only.
- Take a break. You can hide your profile for 1, 7 or 30 days, or delete your account at any time.
The "Out tonight" green dot also switches itself off in the morning, so nobody sees an old status. Read more about it in how to find people going out tonight.
Safety tools are always free
YesTonite is free to use: sign-up is free, you get free new chats every day and replies are always free. Blocking and reporting are never behind a paywall. Optional paid extras, such as more new chats or hiding your profile, are there if you want them, with no subscriptions. See what's free on YesTonite.
Meeting in a group
If you'd rather meet people with others around, events are a relaxed option. Members host open events you can join instantly and closed events where the host approves guests. See how events work, including waitlists and private addresses.
