A dating app without matches: why we removed the swipe

No swiping, no waiting for a match. On YesTonite you see someone you’d like to meet and say hello — one message opens the chat for both of you.

Neon string lights over a busy night market

Most dating apps put a gate between you and a conversation. Both people have to swipe right before anyone is allowed to say hello, and until that happens you are left waiting, refreshing and wondering. We think that gate slows everything down and makes meeting people feel like a game of chance. So YesTonite simply doesn't have it.

No matches, no swiping. Just people. Here is how that works in practice, why we chose it and what it means for you when you open the app.

How "no matches" works

  1. You see people nearby. Each profile shows one photo, an age, a sign and an "interest for tonight", along with an approximate distance.
  2. Someone catches your eye. You write a first message, the same way you might walk up and say hello at a bar.
  3. The chat opens for both of you. That single message starts the conversation. The other person can reply right away, and replies are always free.

Nobody has to "like you back" before you can talk. Nobody is left wondering why a match never happened. Either the conversation starts, or the other person chooses not to reply, which is a perfectly clear answer too.

Why we removed the swipe

Less waiting, more talking

Matching turns meeting people into a sorting exercise. You judge hundreds of photos in a few seconds each, then wait to see who judged you the same way. Without that step, the first thing that happens is a real sentence from a real person, which is how most good conversations start offline as well.

Messages mean more

Every member gets a set of free new chats each day, refreshing at local midnight. Because new chats are limited, people tend to write when they actually want to talk, rather than to collect matches they will never message. Replies never count against that limit, so answering someone is always free and always possible.

It fits casual plans

Casual dating is often spontaneous. If you want to go out tonight, you don't want to wait two days for a mutual swipe. Sending one message to someone who is also up for plans is much closer to how going out actually works. Our guide to what casual dating is explains the relaxed mindset behind this.

You stay in control

No matches does not mean no boundaries. If you are not interested, simply don't reply. If someone crosses a line, you can block them, which hides you from each other everywhere, or report them, which also blocks them by default. You can read more in our casual dating safety guide.

What we show, and what we don't

Profiles are intentionally simple. The idea is to give you just enough to decide whether you'd like to say hello, without turning anyone into a long list of statistics.

  • One photo up front. More photos are available in the full profile.
  • Age and sign. Signs include man, woman, two men, two women, woman + man (a couple sharing one profile) and other.
  • Interest for tonight. One thing they're up for, which makes a great first message.
  • Approximate distance. Never an exact location.
  • Activity hints. A pink dot for people who are active now, and a green dot for people who are out tonight.

First names are not on profiles. They are shared inside a chat only when each person taps "Share your name", so you decide when you're comfortable.

Writing a first message that works

Without a match to break the ice, your first message does that job. It doesn't need to be clever. It just needs to be friendly and give the other person something easy to reply to.

  • Use their interest for tonight. "Live jazz sounds great, do you have a favourite spot?" is far better than "hey".
  • Be specific when you're ready. "Fancy a drink at the bar by the river around nine?" makes saying yes easy.
  • Keep it light. A short message with a question feels relaxed and gives the other person room.
  • Respect silence. If someone doesn't answer, let it go. "Not tonight" is a complete answer, even when it is unspoken.

Isn't this more pressure?

Some people worry that without matches they'll receive messages they don't want. In practice, the daily limit on new chats keeps things calm, and you are never obliged to answer. Replies are free, so if you do want to talk, money is never in the way. And if you'd like a break, you can hide your profile for 1, 7 or 30 days as an optional paid extra, or delete your account at any time.

Others worry about being ignored. That can happen, just as it can when you say hello to someone in a bar. The difference is that you find out quickly and can move on, instead of waiting for a match that may never arrive.
